Q: Where are you from?
A: I’m from Metamora, MI, which is near Flint.
Q: Why did you choose Michigan Tech?
A: I learned about Michigan Tech through a college fair, but was unsure because of the distance from home and the smaller size. Once we drove into town, I knew it was where I wanted to be. Surrounded by nature; it immediately felt like home.
Q: Why Environmental Engineering?
A: After seeing the impacts of the Flint water crisis near my hometown, I realized I could do something to help, so I switched from geophysics to environmental engineering. I want a career where I can come home and see that I made a difference.
Q: What has been your favorite class?
A: My favorite class has been Environmental Monitoring & Measurement Analysis (EMMA). It’s an intro course to environmental analysis and gives you a taste of what environmental engineers do on a day-to-day basis.
Q: What has been your most rewarding experience?
A: Being in an area with rich mining history, I enjoy exploring the abandoned mining structures. It’s amazing to read about their history and then witness the impact the process has had on the environment. I like applying concepts from the classroom and lab to the real world. Things I’ve learned about water quality have helped me pick out some of my favorite fishing spots!
Q: What are the strengths of the environmental engineering department?
A: The department brings in faculty with real-world experiences. They’re able to talk about what they’ve done in their career, where they’ve traveled, and the research they’ve completed. We know they have career experience and can guide us as we begin ours.
Q: What is your expected graduation date?
A: I hope to graduate in fall 2019 or spring 2020.
Q: What do you envision for your future career?
A: I value research and professional experience, but I’m drawn to the research aspect. I’d really like to study invasive species or work in the field of water quality.
